Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) is a research university located in Troy, New York. As the 49th ranked research university in the United States, RPI is commonly known for their academics. However, many talented student-athletes attend RPI, including the members of the Ice Hockey program that compete at the NCAA Division I level.
Upon meeting with RPI, the signage professionals at AMI shared ideas and took measurements and photos of target areas within the Houston Field House at RPI. After returning to the shop and reviewing the images, AMI used their experience and expertise to create an initial concept proposal for RPI.
RPI reviewed the concept proposal and provided AMI with feedback to take the next steps. Once the appropriate materials were selected for each application of the project, RPI provided image files and message copy to the AMI Graphic Design team who put together a full design package to return to RPI. After the design package was approved, AMI provided a final site survey with their lead installer to take production measurements and walk through the space to ensure there were no surprises upon installation.
Adhesive wall murals were installed in various areas of the facility. In the image above, an adhesive wall mural was installed in the film room to promote team pride and create a professional environment.
The red striping is continued around the perimeter of the room with a full wall mural installed behind the television. These wall murals above were installed on smooth surfaces which is common. However, delivering on the RPI’s vision meant AMI had to be proficient with both smooth and rough surfaces.
The rough surfaces are nothing new for our expert installers and were handled with ease. The bland areas outside of the locker rooms were brought to life with adhesive wall murals featuring previous student-athletes.
In the hallways of the facility, custom displays were installed featuring historical information about the program and prior student-athletes. These custom displays extend the professional environment into the hallway while also recognizing the accomplishments of previous programs. This custom display will stand the test of time and be a source of inspiration for student-athletes for years to come. The unique design of these displays allows them to be updated easily to add new teams players to the display.
This project extended branding to the entryway of the building as well. Above the entryway doors to the field house, dimensional lettering was installed to add some team pride and excitement to the building. Signage was also installed inside the locker room, on exterior doors, and other areas of the building.
The final project consisted of several thousand square feet of adhesive wall murals on both smooth and textured wall surfaces along with painted acrylic dimensional text that provided an extra pop to the branding. Additionally, dye sublimated cloth silicone edge graphics (SEG frames) were placed in more public locations to provide a high end look. Banners were placed on the sides of the bleachers to promote the new core team values in the arena and also doubles as a layer of privacy for the underside of the bleachers.
